St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday, but I love all the green. So, Happy Green Day everyone!

This is one of my favorite native plants. It’s licorice fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza) and you got it, the roots taste like licorice. It is green all winter on southern Vancouver Island, one of my homes. I love these little lichens and of course the moss. I tucked these into the rocks, I collected and placed myself, about 12 years ago. They dry up and get crispy all summer, until the first fall rains start and begin to refresh the land. They emerge with the most perfect ‘spring’ green. Just what is needed after a long dry summer.
Please don’t collect native plants from the wild, ask for it at a nursery or from a friend.

Great colors, so soothing.
